Windows Server 2025 Datacenter
Windows Server 2025 Datacenter is the current version of Microsoft's server operating system in the edition for highly virtualised datacentres and cloud environments. Compared with Standard, it offers unlimited virtual machines, Storage Spaces Direct, software-defined networking, shielded virtual machines and GPU partitioning with high availability in a cluster. Mainstream support runs until November 2029 and security updates until November 2034. You receive the licence key by e-mail and can convert the evaluation installation to the full version with a single command.

Physical or virtual server
64-bit 1.4 GHz processor (x64 with NX/DEP, CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF, PrefetchW, SLAT, SSE4.2 and POPCNT), 2 GB RAM (4 GB recommended for Desktop Experience), ECC memory for physical hosts, 32 GB of disk space, Gigabit Ethernet adapter (PCI Express). TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot are only needed for certain features such as BitLocker. Secured-core features require certified hardware (TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, VBS, DRTM).

How many virtual machines can I run?
Datacenter edition lets you run an unlimited number of Windows Server virtual machines and Hyper-V isolated containers on the licensed server. With AVMA, virtual machines running Windows Server 2012 R2 to 2025 activate automatically on the activated Hyper-V host using a generic AVMA key.
How does Datacenter differ from Standard?
Datacenter adds unlimited virtual machines, Storage Spaces Direct, software-defined networking with Network Controller, support for shielded virtual machines, unrestricted Storage Replica and GPU partitioning with high availability in a cluster (Standard supports it on standalone servers only). Most other roles and features are the same in both editions.
I have Standard edition or the evaluation version – do I need to reinstall?
No. Microsoft supports converting both Standard edition and the evaluation version to Datacenter with the DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter command and your key – see the Instructions tab. Only a domain controller cannot be converted from the evaluation version.
Are client access licences (CALs) included?
No, this is the licence for the server itself. Under Microsoft's licensing terms, every user or device that accesses the server needs a Windows Server CAL, and connecting to a Remote Desktop Services session host also requires an RDS CAL of the same or a newer version.
How long will the system receive updates?
Windows Server 2025 follows the Fixed Lifecycle Policy. Mainstream support runs until November 2029 and extended support with security updates at no extra cost until November 2034.
Which languages is the system available in?
The evaluation ISO from the Microsoft Evaluation Center is offered in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Japanese and Simplified Chinese. Microsoft localises the Windows Server user interface into 18 languages, including Czech, Polish and Hungarian, and a language pack can be added to the installed system.

Windows Server 2025 Datacenter
Installation and activation
- Register at the Microsoft Evaluation Center and download the 64-bit ISO image of Windows Server 2025 (for example in English or German).
- Create a bootable USB flash drive (at least 8 GB) from the ISO, or attach the ISO to a virtual machine, and start the setup.
- During setup, choose the Datacenter edition, either with Desktop Experience or as Server Core.
- After installation, open PowerShell or Command Prompt as administrator and run DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions to check that ServerDatacenter is listed.
- Run DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula, replacing XXXXX-… with the key from your e-mail (no space after the colon), then restart the server when it finishes.
- Check the status with slmgr.vbs /dlv – the output of the full version no longer contains EVAL. If the system is not activated yet, activate it online with slmgr.vbs /ato.
- Convert the server before promoting it to a domain controller – a domain controller cannot be converted from the evaluation version. If you already run the full version of the same edition, just enter the key with slmgr.vbs /ipk and activate it with slmgr.vbs /ato.
