Windows Server 2025 Standard
Windows Server 2025 Standard is the current version of Microsoft's server operating system in the edition for physical or minimally virtualised environments. It brings a Windows 11-style desktop, SMB over QUIC, improved Active Directory, Hotpatch through Azure Arc and a range of new security features. Mainstream support runs until November 2029 and security updates until November 2034. You receive the licence key by e-mail and can convert the evaluation installation to the full version with a single command.

A Windows 11-style desktop
A Windows 11-style desktop, the modern Task Manager, Windows Terminal and WinGet installed by default. Bluetooth support and easy Wi-Fi enablement are new too.
SMB over QUIC

Physical or virtual server
64-bit 1.4 GHz processor (x64 with NX/DEP, CMPXCHG16b, LAHF/SAHF, PrefetchW, SLAT, SSE4.2 and POPCNT), 2 GB RAM (4 GB recommended for Desktop Experience), ECC memory for physical hosts, 32 GB of disk space, Gigabit Ethernet adapter (PCI Express). TPM 2.0 and UEFI Secure Boot are only needed for certain features such as BitLocker. Secured-core features require certified hardware (TPM 2.0, Secure Boot, VBS, DRTM).

How many servers does the licence cover?
The licence is for 1 server and covers all of its cores. It is a perpetual licence with no subscription to pay.
How many virtual machines can I run?
Standard edition includes rights to 2 Windows Server virtual machines plus the Hyper-V host. If you need more virtual servers, choose Datacenter edition with unlimited virtualisation.
I have the evaluation version installed – do I need to reinstall?
No. You can convert the Standard evaluation with Desktop Experience to the full version with a DISM command and your key – see the Instructions tab. The exception is a domain controller, which cannot be converted from the evaluation version.
Are client access licences (CALs) included?
No, this is the licence for the server itself. Under Microsoft's licensing terms, every user or device that accesses the server needs a Windows Server CAL, and connecting to a Remote Desktop Services session host also requires an RDS CAL of the same or a newer version.
How long will the system receive updates?
Windows Server 2025 follows the Fixed Lifecycle Policy. Mainstream support runs until November 2029 and extended support with security updates at no extra cost until November 2034.
Which languages is the system available in?
The evaluation ISO from the Microsoft Evaluation Center is offered in English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Japanese and Simplified Chinese. Microsoft localises the Windows Server user interface into 18 languages, including Czech, Polish and Hungarian, and a language pack can be added to the installed system.

Windows Server 2025 Standard
Installation and activation
- Register at the Microsoft Evaluation Center and download the 64-bit ISO image of Windows Server 2025 (for example in English or German).
- Create a bootable USB flash drive (at least 8 GB) from the ISO, or attach the ISO to a virtual machine, and start the setup.
- During setup, choose the Standard edition with Desktop Experience – the Server Core option of the Standard evaluation cannot be converted to full Standard.
- After installation, open PowerShell or Command Prompt as administrator and run DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions to check that ServerStandard is listed.
- Run DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerStandard /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula, replacing XXXXX-… with the key from your e-mail (no space after the colon), then restart the server when it finishes.
- Check the status with slmgr.vbs /dlv – the output of the full version no longer contains EVAL. If the system is not activated yet, activate it online with slmgr.vbs /ato.
- Convert the server before promoting it to a domain controller – a domain controller cannot be converted from the evaluation version. If you already run the full version of the same edition, just enter the key with slmgr.vbs /ipk and activate it with slmgr.vbs /ato.
