Windows Server 2025 Datacenter + RDS 50 User CAL
This bundle contains a Windows Server 2025 Datacenter licence and 50 Remote Desktop Services user CALs (RDS User CAL) for up to 50 users connecting via Remote Desktop. Datacenter edition is built for highly virtualised environments and data centres: the licence covers an unlimited number of virtual machines and adds Storage Spaces Direct, software-defined networking and shielded virtual machines. Windows Server 2025 has mainstream support until November 2029 and security updates until November 2034. A perpetual licence with unlimited virtualisation and no subscription.
Unlimited virtualisation
The Datacenter licence covers unlimited virtual machines and Hyper-V containers. Hyper-V supports up to 4 PB of memory and 2,048 logical processors per host.
50 per-user RDS CALs
Each CAL is assigned to a user in Active Directory, who can connect from any number of devices. 2025 RDS CALs also work with older session hosts.
Storage Spaces Direct
Software-defined storage built from the servers' local drives, plus Storage Replica with no limit on partnerships or volume size.
SMB over QUIC
Secure access to file shares over the internet without a VPN – in Windows Server 2025 it is available in every edition.
Stronger Active Directory

What exactly do I get?
A Windows Server 2025 Datacenter licence and 50 Windows Server 2025 RDS User CALs for Remote Desktop Services. You receive the licence keys by e-mail and download the installation media from Microsoft's official website.
How does Datacenter differ from Standard?
Standard covers two virtual machines per licence, Datacenter an unlimited number. Only Datacenter includes Storage Spaces Direct, Network Controller for SDN, Host Guardian Hyper-V Support for shielded VMs and Storage Replica without limits.
How do per-user RDS CALs work?
Each RDS User CAL is assigned to a specific user in Active Directory, who can then connect from any number of devices; per-user CALs cannot be used in a workgroup without a domain. 2025 RDS CALs work with Windows Server 2025 and earlier session hosts, but must be installed on a license server running Windows Server 2025.
Do I need any other licences?
Under Microsoft's licensing rules, Windows Server Datacenter is licensed per core (at least 16 cores per physical server and 8 per processor), and users or devices accessing the server need Windows Server CALs. RDS CALs are an additional licence for Remote Desktop; Windows Server CALs are not included in this bundle.
How long do the licence and support last?
The licence is perpetual. Microsoft provides mainstream support for Windows Server 2025 until 13 November 2029 and extended support with security updates until 14 November 2034.
Which languages is Windows Server available in?
The installation media from the Evaluation Center are available in English and several other languages, including German, French and Spanish. The Windows Server user interface is localised into 18 languages, including Czech, Polish and Hungarian.

Windows Server 2025 Datacenter + RDS 50 User CAL
Installation and activation
- Download the 64-bit Windows Server 2025 ISO from the Microsoft Evaluation Center and install a Windows Server 2025 Datacenter Evaluation edition (Desktop Experience or Server Core). A Datacenter evaluation can only be converted to the full Datacenter edition.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator and run DISM /online /Get-TargetEditions to check that ServerDatacenter is listed as a target edition.
- Run DISM /online /Set-Edition:ServerDatacenter /ProductKey:XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX /AcceptEula with the key from your e-mail and restart the server when prompted. A domain controller cannot be converted, so add the AD DS role only afterwards. Then run slmgr.vbs /dlv and check that the output no longer contains EVAL.
- In Server Manager select Manage > Add Roles and Features, tick Remote Desktop Services and install the Remote Desktop Licensing role service together with any other RDS roles you need.
- Open Tools > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Licensing Manager, select the server and choose Action > Activate Server (automatic connection is recommended). Then use Action > Install Licenses, select the licence programme your CALs come from, enter the licence code and choose Windows Server 2025, Per User and a quantity of 50. 2025 RDS CALs can only be installed on a license server running Windows Server 2025.
- Set the licensing mode: with the RD Connection Broker role, go to Server Manager > Remote Desktop Services > Overview > Edit Deployment Properties > RD Licensing, select Per User and add the license server. Without it, enable the policies Use the specified Remote Desktop license servers and Set the Remote Desktop licensing mode under Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Remote Desktop Services > Remote Desktop Session Host > Licensing.
