Product description
Management for small setups, up to 4 hosts
VMware vCenter Server 8 Foundation
VMware vCenter Server 8 Foundation is the vCenter Server edition for smaller vSphere 8 environments. It provides central management of up to four ESXi hosts and their virtual machines from the web-based vSphere Client. It runs as the vCenter Server Appliance 8. Up to four ESXi hosts under one management console.
Central management
Manage ESXi hosts and their virtual machines from a single console in the web-based vSphere Client.
Up to 4 hosts
The Foundation edition is intended for smaller environments with no more than four ESXi hosts.
vCenter Server Appliance 8
A ready-made virtual appliance; for a small environment the Tiny size with 2 vCPUs and 14 GB RAM is enough.

When your environment grows, upgrade the edition to vCenter Server Standard by replacing the licence.

Frequently asked questions
How many hosts does vCenter Server Foundation manage?
Up to four ESXi hosts. vCenter Server Standard is intended for larger environments.
Can I link several vCenter Servers?
No. Under VMware's licence terms, multiple vCenter Server Foundation instances cannot be joined into one Single Sign-On federation.
How do I enter the licence?
In the vSphere Client, select the vCenter Server instance, choose Configure > Settings > Licensing > Assign License, enter the key on the New License tab, name the licence and click OK. See the Instructions tab for details.
Can I move to the Standard edition later?
Yes. When changing the edition from vCenter Server Foundation to vCenter Server Standard, you replace the existing vCenter Server licence with a new Standard licence.
Can I try vCenter Server first?
Yes. vCenter Server evaluation mode ends 60 days after installation; the licence must be assigned before then, otherwise the hosts disconnect from vCenter Server.
What languages is vCenter Server available in?
vSphere 8, including vCenter Server, is available in English, Italian, French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Korean and Simplified and Traditional Chinese.
